Data cleaning and preparation are part of the clinical data management quality system. Cleaning should be planned before data collection and conducted through documented, reproducible workflows. Preparation includes organizing, transforming, deriving, and summarizing data for specific uses. R is valuable because it makes these processes reviewable and rerunnable, but it should not replace the governed source database or its audit trail.
